Discover Orienteering Launches today at 8:00pm AEDT

Attracting and retaining new participants is essential to the future of orienteering. While long-time members know the thrill of navigating to a hidden control, introducing that excitement to newcomers can be challenging.

Orienteering Australia is launching Discover Orienteering on 9th February, a new introductory Come and Try event model designed to give new participants their first experience of the sport. Developed with input from all states and successfully trialled in the ACT with more than 70 participants, the program is now rolling out nationwide.

Discover Orienteering is about the first taste of orienteering — helping participants understand why orienteering is for them. Events offer real courses and map-based activities in a welcoming, jargon-free environment, with flexible course options and friendly support available. Participants are then encouraged to join a Learn to Orienteer, which focuses on skill development.

Importantly, the program is easy to deliver, with ready-made resources, templates and signage reducing volunteer workload.
Clubs can even integrate Discover Orienteering activities into existing community events.
