Successful 2020 QLD Long Distance Championships

What a great event in fabulous terrain!
Thank you to all the volunteers from Ugly Gully for hosting the 2020 Queensland Long Distance Championships and in particular to course setter Greg Chatfield who, along with event controller Rob Rapkins, hung over 103 controls during the past week, event director James Mitchell, and mapper Geoff Peck - without your dedication and efforts, this event would not have been possible.

Described as possibly the best granite terrain in Australia, this area provided plenty of challenge for all orienteers. Congratulations to everyone who competed and to those who gained a placing over the two days.

A few statistics to sum up the two days of competition.

Number of competitors: 141

Largest winning margin (over two days): Rob Dominish - 1hr 33 min.

Most competitive age group: M20 - only 6 minutes between the top three competitors.

Most consistent age group: M55 with 6 out of 8 competitors completing both days

Largest age group: W55 - 10 competitors

Oldest Competitor: Clive Pope - still going strong at 84!

Youngest Competitor: Xanthin Laws - what potential at just 7 years old!

Perseverance Award for longest time out on the courses: Joe Garbellini - an impressive 4 hours 43 minutes and 33 seconds - I bet he slept well that night!
